The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board will recommend to the Christchurch City Council that Kyle Park become the home of Hornby’s planned new community facilities.

The Board made the decision to recommend Kyle Park at an extraordinary meeting last night. Its recommendation will be considered by the Council at its meeting next week.

The Council has $35 million budgeted for a library, customer services and recreation and sport centre in the Hornby area to cater for the growing population in the south-west of the city.

Last year Denton Park was identified as the preferred location for the new community facilities but that location was subsequently ruled out.

If the Council accepts the Board’s recommendation at its 13 December meeting and agrees to put the new facilities on Kyle Park, the public will be consulted early next year on a partial change to the park’s reserve classification and an amendment to the management plan.

It is hoped that construction of the new facilities can begin in early 2021.
