Find out when you need to put your wheelie bins out over the Christmas holidays and check out opening hours for pools, libraries, fitness centres and other Council facilities.

Kerbside collection

  • Most wheelie bins will be emptied a day later than usual over the Christmas/New Year period. 
  • Because Christmas and New Year's Day fall on a Tuesday, the Tuesday collection will move to Wednesday, the Wednesday collection will move to Thursday, the Thursday collection will move to Friday, and the Friday collection will move to Saturday.
  • Bins that are normally emptied on a Monday will be emptied as usual on Monday 24 December and Monday 31 December.
  • All kerbside collections will take place on the normal days from the week beginning Monday 7 January.

Eco-drops and transfer stations

  • All Eco-drops and transfer stations will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Recreation and sport centres

  • All Council owned recreation and sport centres will be closed from 6pm on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day.
  • The Graham Condon fitness centre and indoor pools will be open from 7am to 8pm between 26 December and 30 December. On 31 December they will be open from 7am to 6pm. On 1 January they will be open from 10am to 8pm. Between 2 January and 6 January they will be open between 7am and 8pm. Normal hours will resume on 7 January.
  • The Pioneer fitness centre will be open from 7am to 7pm between 26 December and 30 December. On 31 December the fitness centre will open from 7am to 6pm.  On 1 January the fitness centre will open from 10am to 7pm. Between 2 January and 6 January the fitness centre will open from 7am to 7pm. 
  • Pioneer's indoor pools will be open from 7am to 8pm between 26 December and 30 December.  On 31 December the indoor pools will be open from 7am to 6pm.  On 1 January the pools will be open from 10am to 8pm, while from 2 January to 6 January they will open from 7am to 8pm.
  • Taiora QEII will be open from 7am to 8pm from December 26 to 30 and from 7am to 6pm on 31 December.  On New Year's Day opening hours will be from 10am to 8pm.  Between 2 January and 6 January Taiora QEII will be open from 7am to 8pm. Please note the hydroslide's opening hours over the Christmas/New Year period will be from 10am to 6pm.
  • Jellie Park's fitness centre and indoor pools will be open from 7am to 8pm between 26 December and 30 December, and from 7am to 6pm on New Year's Eve. They will open from 10am to 8pm on 1 January. From 2 January to 6 January the pools and fitness centre will be open from 7am to 8pm. Jellie Park's hydroslides will be open over the Christmas/New Year period from noon to 6pm.
  • Normal hours will resume at all Council owned recreation and sport centres on Monday 7 January.

Libraries

  • All libraries will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day and January 2.
  • The Matuku Takotako:Sumner Centre will be closed for maintenance from 27 to 30 December. It will reopen on 31 December.
  • The Little River Library will be closed from 4.30pm Monday, 24 December until Thursday, 3 January at 8.30am.
  • The mobile library's last day of operation for 2018 is Friday 21 December. It will be back on the road on Monday 7 January.
  • On 27 and 28 December all  libraries will close at 6pm, except Tūranga and the Halswell library, which will close at 7pm.
  • On 31 December all libraries will close at 6pm except Tūranga, which will stay open to 7pm, and the Linwood Library at Eastgate, which will be open from 10am to 5pm.
  • Normal hours will resume at all libraries on Thursday 3 January.

Christchurch Art Gallery

  • The Christchurch Art Gallery will be closed on Christmas Day. Over the rest of the holiday period it will be open from 10am to 5pm daily.

Civic Offices

  • The Civic Offices in Hereford Street will be closed from 5pm on 24 December until 26 December. They will be open from 9am to 4pm from 27 December to 28 December and on 31 December. The offices will be closed again from 1 to 2 January 2019. Normal hours will resume from 3 January.

Service desks

  • The service desks at the Akaroa, Beckenham, Fendalton, Hornby, Linwood, Little River, Lyttelton, Papanui, Riccarton and Shirley centres will be closed from 25 December 2018 to 2 January 2019.

  • Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre service desk will only be closed on Christmas Day. On Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, it will be open from 11.30am until 6pm. On Boxing Day and 2 January, it will be open from 11.30am until 7pm and from 27 to 30 December, the desk will operate from 11.30am until 7pm.

Contact Centre

  • The Council Contact Centre will be open 24 hours, seven days a week throughout the Christmas-New Year period. Call 941-8999 or 0800 800-169.
