A public artwork that pays tribute to the signatories of the Treaty of Waitangi could soon be standing tall in Victoria Square.

The artwork, Mana Motuhake, is the work of master carver Fayne Robinson and features two intricately carved upright waka that stand almost five metres tall and seven light post wraps with design elements depicting mahinga kai.

Mr Robinson was commissioned to create the artwork by Ōtākaro Limited as part of the multi-million dollar upgrade of Victoria Square. Ōtākaro now want to gift the artwork, valued at more than $300,000, to Christchurch City Council.

Today the Council’s Social, Community Development and Housing Committee decided to recommend the Council approve the permanent installation of the artwork in Victoria Square.

It is proposed to install the artwork near the statue of Queen Victoria. Ōtākaro will meet the costs of installation, plus the first 12 months of maintenance.

“This artwork will be a very special addition to Victoria Square,’’ says Cr Phil Clearwater, Chair of the Social, Community Development and Housing Committee.

“Not only does it commemorate Treaty signatories, but through the many references to mahinga kai it also acknowledges the rich history of the Victoria Square area as a traditional food gathering and trading place for Ngāi Tūāhuriri,’’ Cr Clearwater says.
