The home of Hornby's planned new community facilities could be decided before Christmas.

Kyle Park

Kyle Park could become home to Hornby's new community facilities.

The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board is due to consider Kyle Park as the site for the new facilities at an extraordinary Board meeting on Wednesday, 5 December.

With more than 12,000 new homes expected in Christchurch’s south-west by 2044, the Council has approved a $35 million budget for a library, customer services and recreation and sport centre to serve the growing population.

Council staff are recommending an early decision of Kyle Park as the preferred site for a co-located facility. If the Board agree, their final decision on the preferred site will go before the full Council on 13 December.  The Board may also ask for more information on other potential sites which would be considered in early 2019.

If Kyle Park gets the go-ahead, consultation will begin in early 2019 on a partial change to the reserve classification and amendments to the management plan. Construction is planned to begin in early 2021, with the facility set to open at the end of 2022.

Consultation to gauge the community's views on suitable locations was carried out in 2017. Denton Park was identified last year as the preferred location for the new facilities but that location was subsequently ruled out.
