Visitors to Akaroa's Gaiety Hall over the summer will notice it getting some tender loving care.

Akaroa's Gaiety Hall is getting some work done on it over the summer.

From Monday 3 December, the 139-year-old Italianate theatre, known as the "ornament" of Akaroa, will be undergoing some maintenance work.

"Like all great heritage buildings, the Gaiety needs a little extra attention when it comes to routine maintenance," says Paul McKeefry, Community Facilities Specialist for Christchurch City Council.

"Over the next few months, we're replacing the roof to the main hall and applying borer treatment throughout the building. We're also replacing a number of boards throughout the building, including the weatherboards on the south external wall, the deck boards, and some boards on the floor of the main hall," Mr McKeefry says.

Minor maintenance work will also be done, and it's expected the work will be completed by mid February.

The Gaiety was damaged in the February 2011 earthquakes, and enjoyed a grand reopening in April 2016 after being meticulously repaired and strengthened.
