A proposal to introduce a 30 km/h speed limit on St Asaph Street and sections of Hagley Avenue and Riccarton Avenue at Hospital Corner has attracted more than 700 public submissions.

A 30 km/h sign.

A 30km/h speed limit has been proposed on St Asaph St.

The proposal also included introducing a 10 km/h speed limit on Oxford Terrace and Antigua Street alongside the new Outpatients building.

The majority of the 737 submissions – around two thirds – oppose lowering speed limits.

Christchurch City Council staff are preparing a report on the submissions received, which they will present to a Hearings Panel made up of elected members at a meeting on Wednesday, 21 November.

At that meeting, those submitters who had indicated they would like to speak to their submission will have the opportunity to address the Hearings Panel.

The Hearings Panel will also hear from the authors of an independent review, commissioned by the Council, into the safety and functionality of St Asaph Street.

Once the Hearings Panel has considered the submissions from the public, it will make its recommendations on the proposed speed limit changes to the Council.
