An electric scooter share service has hit the streets of Christchurch.

American bike and scooter share company Lime officially launched its Christchurch fleet of e-scooters this morning after being granted a permit by Christchurch Council to operate them in the city on a three month trial basis.

Electric scooters have hit the streets and footpaths of Christchurch.

Lime’s fleet will include 400 scooters initially but eventually it plans to have 700 scooters in Christchurch.

The e-scooters will provide a convenient and environmentally friendly travel option for Christchurch residents, according to Council Transport Operations Manager Steffan Thomas.

“They can be a good option for short trips around town and have the potential to complement our bus and other transport systems,’’ Mr Thomas says.

The scooters, which can be used on either the road or the footpath, will be available at various locations throughout the city and will cost $1 plus 30 cents a minute to hire – or about $5 for 15 minutes. The e-scooters are dockless so users find, unlock and pay for the scooters using an app.

“As with any mode of transport, we urge scooter users to look out for others and go at an appropriate speed, particularly on the footpath,” says Mr Thomas. “Everyone needs to be aware of each other and be considerate while they travel.

“If you are planning on using the scooters, I would encourage you to look at the guidelines around how to operate the scooters safely and where to leave them when you reach your destination.’’
