The Council today voted in favour of making a number of modifications to the An Accessible City transport programme so there is better alignment between the planned projects and public and private developments happening in the central city.

The Council will engage with the community about plans to lower the speed limit on St Asaph Street to 30km an hour and to upgrade the streetscape on sections of both High and Kilmore streets.

A 30km an hour sign.

A 30km an hour speed limit is being proposed for St Asaph Street.

It agreed that before the Long Term Plan is approved, Council staff engage with key stakeholders about the proposed changes to High Street, with a view to possibly bringing the work forward.

It also agreed that at the same time staff should engage with the community:

  • On the proposed works on Kilmore Street between Colombo and Durham streets so that work can be completed ahead of the Town Hall restoration being finished.
  • On the introduction of a 30km an hour speed limit on St Asaph Street.

The Council agreed that the delivery of the proposed Victoria Street upgrade is on hold subject to further engagement with stakeholders. A separate report on this will be presented to the Council’s Infrastructure, Transport and Environment Committee once the Council has engaged with stakeholders.

Staff will also investigate options for connecting Rapanui / Shag Rock cycleway to the central city 30kmh zone.
