Find out when you need to put your rubbish out over the Christmas holidays and check out opening hours for pools, libraries, fitness centres and other Council facilities.

Kerbside rubbish collection

  • As Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on a Monday, the Monday collection will move to Tuesday, the Tuesday collection will move to Wednesday, the Wednesday collection will move to Thursday, the Thursday collection will move to Friday, and the Friday collection will move to Saturday.
  • Normal collection days will resume from Monday 8 January.

Eco-drops and transfer stations

  • All Eco-drops and transfer stations will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Libraries

  • All libraries will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
  • On Wednesday, 27 December the Diamond Harbour, Little River and Mobile Library will be closed. All other libraries will close at 6pm except the Akaroa Library, which will close at its usual time. 
  • On 28 and 29 December the Little River and Mobile Library will be closed. All other libraries will close at 6pm except the Akaroa and Diamond Harbour libraries, which will close at their usual times.
  • On Saturday, 30 December the Little River library will be closed. All other libraries will be open their normal weekend hours.
  • On Sunday, 31 December libraries will be open their normal weekend hours, except the Central Library Peterborough and the FingerTip libraries, which will close at 4pm.
  • All libraries will be closed New Year's Day and 2 January.  Normal opening hours will apply from 3 January.

Recreation and sport centres

  • All Council-owned recreation and sport centres will be closed from 6pm on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day.
  • The Graham Condon fitness centre and indoor pools will be open from 7am to 8pm between 26 December and 30 December. On 31 December they will be open from 7am to 6pm. On 1 January they will be open from 10am to 8pm. Between 2 January and 7 January they will be open between 7am and 8pm. Normal hours will resume on 8 January.
  • Jellie Park’s fitness centre and indoor pools will be open from 7am to 8pm between 26 December and 30 December. They will be open from 7am to 6pm on New Year’s Eve and from 10am to 8pm on New Year’s Day. Between 2 January and 7 January they will be open from 7am to 8pm.
  • Jellie Park’s outdoor pools will be open from 7am to 7pm between 26 December and 30 December. Between those dates the hydroslide will be open from midday to 6pm. On New Year’s Eve the outdoor pools and hydroslide will be open from 7am to 6pm. On New Year’s Day the outdoor pools will be open from 10am to 7pm and the hydroslide from midday to 6pm. The outdoor pools will be open from 7am to 7pm between 2 January and 7 January. Over that period the hydroslide will be open from midday to 6pm.
  • Pioneer’s fitness centre will be open from 7am to 7pm between 26 December and 30 December. The centre will be open from 7am to 6pm on New Year’s Eve and between 10am and 7pm on New Year’s Day. From 2 January to 7 January the fitness centre will be open 7am to 7pm. Pioneer’s indoor pools are closed for refurbishment until the end of March 2017.
  • The QEII Fitness Centre will be open from 8am to 2pm between 26 December and 31 December. On New Year’s Day it will open between 10am and 2pm. From 2 January to 7 January it will be open between 8am and 2pm.

Christchurch Art Gallery

  • The Christchurch Art Gallery will be closed on Christmas Day. Over the rest of the holiday period it will be open from 10am to 5pm daily.

The Civic Offices

  • The Civic Offices in Hereford Street will be closed from 5pm on 22 December until 27 December. Between 27 December and 29 December they will be open from 9am to 4pm. They will be closed again from then until 3 January.

Service desks

  • The Hornby, Linwood, Lyttelton, Little River, Fendalton, Shirley Beckenham, Riccarton and Akaroa service desks will be closed from 23 December until 3 January.
  • The Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre service desk will be closed on Christmas Day. Over the holiday period it will be open on weekdays from 9am until 7pm  and on weekends and public holidays from midday to 7pm.  However, on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve it will close at 6pm.

The Contact Centre

  • The Council’s Contact Centre will be staffed throughout the Christmas/New Year holiday period. Call 941-8999 or 0800 800-169.
