Despite recent rain many Council sports grounds are open for play this weekend so don't count on sleeping in.

An update on the Council website today shows many fields are, at this stage, available for tomorrow’s matches, although others are closed because of the soggy conditions.

Individual sporting codes will make their own decisions on whether games should go ahead.

Continued rain has added to already wet field conditions this week, Council Operations Manager Neighbourhood and Sports Parks Al Hardy says.

“We have been working collaboratively with the Regional Sports Organisations to understand sport club requirements for the weekend, in addition to conducting individual field assessments both yesterday and today.

“The result is that we have been able to provide a number of sports fields to meet requested sporting requirements for this weekend. As always, it will still be the responsibility of the match officials to make final decisions on play proceeding on the day.”

A local state of emergency was declared in Christchurch last Saturday in response to flooding and was lifted on Tuesday afternoon.

MetService is predicting mainly fine conditions for tomorrow with some morning cloud and frosts. There is a chance of showers until the afternoon.
