Services are held on 25 April throughout the city to commemorate ANZAC Day every year.

Dawn Service - From 6.15am, Monday 25 April 2016

The dawn service will be held in Cranmer Square.

Service format

  • From 6am–6.15am: The people gather
  • 6.15am: Parade begins
  • 6.30am: Service begins centred around the memorial cenotaph
  • 7.15am: Service concludes with wreath-laying 

Organised by the Canterbury Branch of the Malayan Veterans Association in conjunction with the Christchurch Branch of the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association (RSA) and Christchurch City Council. Mayor Lianne Dalziel will lay a wreath on behalf of the citizens of Christchurch.

The service will include a volley of shots fired and a fly-over by the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The New Zealand Army band will be in attendance. The service will be projected on two large screens.

The parade is for Uniformed and Returned Services Personnel only. It starts at Armagh street from the RSA building. If members of the public want to see it this will be possible from Cranmer Square. There will not be a piper at the Dawn Service but there will be a bugler playing The Last Post. At the Citizens’ Service there will be a piper playing Flowers of the Forest. There will be no seating provided.  If you are mobility impaired and need assistance, please speak to one of the ushers on site. The Service will be about 30–45mins long.  Families, individuals and groups are invited to lay wreaths at the Cenotaph in Cranmer Square at the conclusion of the Dawn Service. After the Dawn Service they will be moved to the Christchurch Memorial RSA building on Armagh Street. If the weather is bad on 25 April the event will still continue if wet. The Dawn Service will not screen live on TV but it may be covered in the News. 

Transport

On ANZAC Day the bus services runs to a Saturday timetable but as they generally start at 6am it is highly unlikely you will be able to catch one in time for the Dawn Service. You will be able to catch one in time for the 10am Citizens’ Service at ChristChurch Transitional Cathedral. Visit Metroinfo to find out more about bus services visit for scheduling details. Vehicular access to Cranmer Square will be restricted by road closures. There will be no specific public parking areas. Street parking will be limited, so people are encouraged to carpool and/or come early. 

On-site toilets

There will be port-a-loos on site at Cranmer Square.


Citizens’ Service - 10am, Monday 25 April 2016

The Citizens' Service will be held at Christchurch Transitional Cathedral, Latimer Square.

Organised by Christchurch City Council in conjunction with ChristChurch Cathedral and the RSA. The address at this service will be given by Commander Simon Rooke, RNZN Commanding Officer HMNZS Canterbury. It will be attended by representatives of the Defence Force, Consular Corps and various Christchurch youth groups.
