TE PAPA HAUORA HEALTH PRECINCT

Te Papa Hauora is a place for people to gather, collaborate and share ideas in the centre of a vibrant, creative and inspiring healthcare system. It is part of a thriving international city, contributing to Christchurch’s growing reputation as an excellent place to invest, work, live and play.

Te Papa Hauora is increasing Canterbury’s productivity and contributing to economic growth and social well-being by attracting top-quality researchers, businesses, students, health sector workers and associated staff to the city; delivering long-term benefits to Christchurch and Canterbury, as well as New Zealand. As a world-class hub for health education, research and innovation, Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct is a hive of activity in Christchurch’s city centre. The developing Health Precinct brings together researchers, students and clinicians in one central space; all contributing to a vibrant, stimulating and productive environment.

Te Papa Hauora is based on the proven principle that co-locating clinical care, teaching and research brings many advantages, especially in the rapid translation of research findings to the clinical environment. There are several excellent, mature examples of precincts using this principle, including in Boston Massachusetts, London, Melbourne and several locations in Sydney.

Compared to some overseas precincts, Te Papa Hauora embraces a broader agenda, with participation from both commercial and community interests and a growing culture of innovation and entrepreneurship.

A flagship entity for Te Papa Hauora is Manawa. This facility co-locates health education and research activities for Te Whatu Ora Waitaha, the University of Canterbury, and Ara Institute of Canterbury. Partners are sharing infrastructure and benefitting from synergies created by collaboration.

The University of Otago is investing $150m into a new research facility to expand its Christchurch campus. The facility will provide new opportunities for further collaboration with others within the Health Precinct.

Te Papa Hauora will attract national and international research talent and funding. This is supported by significant investment in Christchurch Hospital facilities, including a new acute services building and outpatients facility. These are part of the largest health-related building project in New Zealand. Construction of the acute services building newly completed, including a new acute services wing, additional operating theatres, a purpose-designed space for children, an expanded intensive care unit, a radiology department and new emergency department.

Economic benefits associated with Te Papa Hauora will come from bio-medical and clinical research; health sciences education; health innovation and industry partnerships; and health-related information technology created by a range of private, academic and government organisations.

Te Papa Hauora forms a western gateway to the city centre, with easy access from the newly opened Health Precinct public transport super stop to Te Papa Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct and Metro Sports Facility (under construction).

Te Papa Hauora borders the city’s developing South Frame with its green, vibrant social spaces, cafes and restaurants.
