Cruise ship visits

Akaroa Harbour has become the chosen destination for cruise ships visiting Canterbury during the 2011/12 season, due to earthquake damage in Lyttelton Harbour.

The cruise ship season runs from October 2011 to April 2012, and an influx of visitors are expected when cruise ships are berthed in Akaroa Harbour.

Depending on the size of the vessel, each cruise ship could have up to 2000 visitors. Very occasionally two cruise ships will visit Akaroa Harbour at the same time, resulting in a maximum number of 4000 visitors.

A schedule of vessels visiting Akaroa Harbour [PDF 31KB] includes passenger numbers and visit dates – all information included on the schedule is subject to change.

The map (right) highlights the parking restrictions that will be in place in the township, between 5am and 6pm only on the days when a cruise ship is berthed.

The new parking plan will ease congestion in the township and will accommodate the large visitor numbers and their associated tourism activity.
