Barrington Mall entrance - safety improvements

Update

What

NIGHT WORKS: we’ll be making safety improvements to the Barrington Street mall entrance.

Why

To provide increased safety for pedestrians.

Where

Barrington Mall entranceway, 259 Barrington Street.

When

Work will start on Sunday 21 February 2021 and is expected to be completed by late March 2021 (weather dependent). Work will be undertaken between Monday to Sunday, 7pm to 7am.

Contact

The main contractor is Fulton Hogan. Phone 0800 762 334 or email cant.info@fultonhogan.com between Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 4:30pm. Phone us after hours if the matter is urgent.
A second contractor, Higgins, will resurface Barrington Street between 14 to 19 March 2021. For enquiries about this resurfacing please phone Higgins on 03 341 4370 during this time.

What are we doing?

The main contractor, Fulton Hogan, will work mostly at night for three weeks to make safety improvements including:

  • The right turn out of Barrington Mall onto Barrington Street will be removed, but the right turn into Barrington Mall from Barrington Street will remain
  • Yellow lines will be extended and car parks will be removed on Barrington Street
  • A pedestrian zone will be marked across the Barrington Mall entrance
  • Construct new kerb and footpath
  • Some work will need to be done during the day (e.g.: remove and install street lights)

A separate contractor, Higgins, will resurface Barrington Street on Sunday 14 March 2021 (full day and night). The remainder of their work is expected to be done at night between 14 to 19 March 2021.

Once the resurfacing of Barrington Street is complete, Fulton Hogan will return to night works for about a week to install the pedestrian median island.

Traffic impacts

  • The right turn out of Barrington Mall onto Barrington Street will be permanently closed from Sunday 21 February 2021
  • The mall entrance will be fully closed each night between 10pm to 6am and reopened each day
  • Traffic will be detoured via the mall’s other entrances during the nights of work
  • Lane shifts will be in place on Barrington Street, and Barrington Street may be stop/go during nights at times
  • Parking near the mall entrance will be removed
  • Please be on the lookout for changes in traffic management and follow signs on site

Night works

  • The crews need lights to see what they are working on. You will notice extra light coming from the street
  • There will be noise from trucks, machinery, and the crew working overnight. We minimise noise as much as possible by carrying out noisier works earlier in the night (e.g.: saw cutting). However some noisier work will need to be carried out all night at times (e.g.: entranceway resurfacing which will take one night)
  • Night work is required due to high traffic volumes on Barrington Street during the day. We realise that night work is disruptive so we aim to complete this work as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this time
