Land

We, along with animals, birds and plants, live on and eat from the land. We need to look after the land so that generations to come can keep living here.

Landscape of hills and tusock.

As the City increases in size, land is converted from natural and rural uses to urban use. This changes the landscape and impacts our ability to produce local food for the City population. Once areas have been urbanised, it is highly unlikely that this process will be reversed.

Changes to land cover can impact vegetation and wildlife, which may not be able to re-adjust. These changes can also affect urban amenity, by spoiling people’s outlook on traditionally open spaces. Ground and surface waters may also be affected, with potential for contamination of groundwater in aquifer recharge areas, and with increased run-off entering surface waters from newly urbanised areas.
