Biodiversity

Biodiversity is the range of plant and animal life in a particular habitat or ecosystem. Good biodiversity is generally seen as representative of a healthy environment and necessary for our well being.

Urban growth, changes in land use practices, the introduction of exotic plant species and the arrival of land based mammals have all placed enormous pressure upon the biodiversity of Christchurch. Habitats have been lost or fragmented, indigenous plant species have been replaced by exotics and indigenous birds and invertebrates killed by introduced animal pests. The halt of biodiversity loss through protection, conservation and restoration projects is seen as a priority for the Council which is working with a number of interested parties to ensure that future generations can enjoy the unique biodiverse ecosystems that exist within Christchurch.
