Register of Speed Limits

Speed limits within Christchurch City boundary are reviewed and consulted on regularly (approx every 12 - 18 months).

The Register Of Speed Limits presents speed limits on all roads within the Christchurch City boundary.

It presents speed limits set by the Christchurch City Speed Limits Bylaw 2005 [PDF 15KB] and the Banks Peninsula District Council Speed Bylaw 2005 [PDF 150KB].

These bylaws allow the Christchurch City Council to set or change the enforceable speed limits on roads within the Council's boundary. It does not however allow the Council to set or change the enforceable speed limits on Transit NZ roads within the Councils boundary.

The enforceable speed limits on roads within the nine designated Urban Traffic Areas are 50 km/hour unless otherwise signed and recorded in the following register and maps.

The enforceable speed limits on roads outside the designated Urban Traffic Areas are 100 km/hour unless otherwise signed and recorded in the following register and maps.

Speed limits within Christchurch City boundary are reviewed and consulted on regularly (approx every 12 - 18 months). This register was last updated 30 October 2007. A hard copy of this register can be viewed at the Council's Civic Offices, Transport and Greenspace Unit, Tuam Street.
