Christchurch Stadium

Rezoning of land at Jack Hinton Drive (Addington) from Open Space 3 (Metropolitan Facilities) to Open Space 3 (Christchurch Stadium) Zone.

Canterbury has been without a suitable stadium for regional, national and international sporting and other events for over a year as a result of the Canterbury earthquakes. AMI Stadium which previously hosted such events has been badly damaged and will take some years to be redeveloped appropriately.

This amendment to the City Plan, using section 27 of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Act 2011, urgently addresses this need, by providing for a temporary multi purpose stadium in Jack Hinton Drive, Addington, to accommodate regional, national and international sporting and other events in the intervening period. A new, temporary zone Open Space 3CS (Christchurch Stadium) replaces the existing Open Space 3 (Metropolitan Facilities) zoning of the existing Rugby League Park (formerly A & P Showgrounds).

The temporary facilities that are able to be constructed or located on the site by virtue of this zoning will provide a temporary multi-use sports and event stadium for sporting fixtures and events for a usual capacity of up to 18,000; a rugby test capacity of 25,000 and a concert capacity of 34,000. It is however a temporary venue pending a more permanent alternative and as such the amendment provides for the lapsing of the plan provisions on 31 December 2017 or such earlier date as a permanent alternative venue is operational.

The Change is made operative by public notice, dated 21 December 2011, under Section 27 of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Act 2011 and the City Plan is deemed to be amended accordingly from that date.
