Akaroa heritage

In February 2008 the Christchurch City Council began a consultation process on the protection and development of Akaroa’s unique historic area.

Akaroa

The Council sought feedback as a result of concern that the historic area was not adequately recognised and protected in the Banks Peninsula Proposed District Plan. The feedback indicated that any future reviews should look beyond the historic area, to the heritage of Akaroa as a whole.

An overview and three reports that focus on particular aspects of the village’s development and heritage protection were completed in 2009: urban design/character, heritage / conservation, and a Ngai Tahu cultural values assessment.

The Akaroa Historical Overview was the first document to be completed and provided the background for the additional reports. All the reports were completed at the end of 2009 and will inform the proposed variation to the Proposed Banks Peninsula District Plan (BPDP) for the protection of areas of heritage value in Akaroa.

Akaroa historical overview

Akaroa Historical Overview is an extensive background report detailing change and development in the town, identifying the existing heritage fabric, and proposing themes that could help identify individual heritage items and buildings and the boundaries for heritage conservation areas.
