Here we provide information on the 'recreation, fun and creativity' outcome. We define the outcome, explain what is being monitored, provide information from the 2007 Baseline report and links to the outcome indicator sheets and various 'stories of success' relating to this outcome.

What is a city for recreation, fun and creativity?

We value leisure time and recognise that the arts, sports and other recreational activities contribute to our economy, identity, health and well-being.

We will know we are succeeding when:

More people participate in leisure activities.

  • We organise our lives to include free time.
  • Everybody can access leisure services and facilities.
  • We enjoy a healthy work/life balance.

More people participate in physical and sporting activities.

  • We value active leisure time.
  • We all have access to excellent facilities and environments for physical activities.
  • A range of local, national and international sporting events are enjoyed in Christchurch city.

Everybody is included in the creation and enjoyment of the arts.

  • Our arts and cultural activities reflect the diversity of people in Christchurch city.
  • We enjoy a range of quality festivals.
  • A range of local, national and international arts and events can be experienced in our city.

2007 Baseline report

Participation in leisure activities

  • In 2006, 77 per cent of people were either 'satisfied' or 'very satisfied' with their work/life balance.
  • 75 per cent of people in 2006 were either 'satisfied' or 'very satisfied' with their leisure time, a decrease of seven per cent from 2004.

Participation in physical and sporting activities

  • The most popular leisure pastime for Christchurch people in 2004 was informal physical activity (53 per cent of people participating).
  • In 2006, 59 per cent of people engaged in physical activity for five days or more per week.  30 per cent of people engaged in physical activity less than four times per week.
  • Between 2000 and 2006, visits to pools and leisure centres significantly increased; the greatest increase was at QEII where visitor number increased by 182 per cent to 2,079,491.

Creation and enjoyment of the Arts

  • In 2006, 65 per cent of people 'slightly agreed' or 'strongly agreed' that it is easy to take part in the arts in Christchurch.
  • In 2006, 77 per cent of people 'agreed' or 'strongly agreed' that Christchurch has a culturally rich and diverse arts scene.
