Background and Introduction
In June 2011, the Council agreed to provide staff support for Christchurch’s only “community-led” master planning exercise for the Sumner commercial area (also known as “Sumner Village Centre”). This decision acknowledged the large amount of progress that had been made by Sumner residents, property and business owners on their future aspirations for their suburb following the earthquakes.
This work has largely been facilitated by the ‘Sumner Urban Design Group’ who have been preparing a ‘draft Sumner Plan’ for all of Sumner, taking in residential and coastal areas extending from Taylors Mistake to Redcliffs.
The draft plan for the wider suburb includes information on Sumner Village Centre. This information will be relevant to preparing the Council supported ‘Sumner Village Centre Master Plan’.
Joint Advisory Group (JAG)
The Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board has appointed a Joint Advisory Group (JAG) to facilitate a collaborative approach to the project and to provide guidance and support to the Sumner Village Centre Master Plan.
The Joint Advisory Group is made up of two representatives from the Community Board, six community representatives from Sumner, and two Council officers. The community representatives are drawn from the Sumner Residents’ Association, the Sumner Urban Design Team, the Sumner Business Association and the Sumner Community Centre.

Sumner Village Centre community drop-in and Focus Group sessions completed
More than 100 people have taken part in the recent workshops and public events for the community-led Sumner Village Centre Master Plan.
These events involved several focus group workshops with key stakeholders and two public drop-in sessions to discuss recovery of Sumner Village Centre.
The sessions were organised to help the Council tap into local knowledge and gather information vital to the recovery and rebuild of Sumner Village Centre.
Feedback from the session - a selection of main themes, ideas and goals.
The Council will work with the Joint Advisory Group on the next stage of the master planning process – the ‘design element’. This involves discussions on how suggestions and ideas from the community could work, and testing them against current best practice.
Once a draft master plan has been developed it will be taken back to the community for feedback.
