Introduction
The Ferry Road / Main Road corridor from the city to the sea is important to local communities and the wider city. It has been identified as a priority for master planning to assist with earthquake recovery.
The Council is beginning with the area between the city (Fitzgerald Avenue) and Ferrymead bridge.
The other portion of Ferry Road / Main Road will be addressed at a later date.

Ferry Road / Main Road Master Plan stages are as follows:
Phase 1: Ferry Road from Fitzgerald Avenue to Ferrymead Bridge
• Stage 1 – Project Set up (completed)
• Stage 2 – Planning Workshops involving community and stakeholders (October 2011 completed)
• Stage 3 - Collaborative Design Process (completed)
• Stage 4 – Feedback/Review (underway)
• Stage 5 – Consultation on draft Master Plan. Produce Final Master Plan for Phase 1 (late-2012).
• Stage 6 – Assess outstanding issues for remainder of Ferry Road / Main Road corridor
Phase 2: Ferrymead Bridge to Sumner (not including Sumner Village Centre)
Similar staging will apply, commencing in July but with the principal focus being the completion of Phase 1.
Ferry Road / Main Road corridor update 2012
A working draft master plan for Phase 1 from Fitzgerald Avenue to Ferrymead Bridge is currently being peer reviewed and changes to the document are underway. Council officers are aiming for an August date to take the draft Master Plan to the Council, with a recommendation that it be adopted for consultation.
The document will contain a vision for the corridor and the key concepts and actions that can be implemented over time by a range of stakeholders.
Community workshops and focus group sessions completed
More than 200 people took part in Council-led Suburban Centres Programme focus group and drop-in sessions on the recovery of Ferry Road/Main Road corridor. The sessions were organised to help the Council find out local knowledge and gather information vital to the recovery and rebuild of the Ferry Road/Main Road corridor, a key arterial that connects the city to the sea.

The 'inquiry by design' workshop
A wide range of information gathered at these Council-led sessions has been used in the ‘design element’ of the master plan process, which provided an opportunity for Council staff to discuss how suggestions and ideas from the community could work, and test them against current best practice. Ideas and options will be presented in the draft Master Plan in early 2012.
