New Civic Building Update (2pm, 6 September 2010)

6 September 2010

The new Christchurch City Council civic building in Hereford Street did what it was designed to do in an earthquake - preserving life rather than keeping the interior in good order.

There is some interior damage, mainly to fixtures and fittings, but we are currently carrying out a detailed structural assessment.

Our focus is on clearing areas for key staff who are working on the city recovery operation and then we will work on opening the building to the public. Our aim is to open for the majority of staff by Tuesday 14th September but we will know more following the structural assessment.

The opening date for the public is not confirmed at this stage.  More information will be available later this week.  All Council services operating out of the Civic Building will be unavailable until it reopens.

Other Council services such as Service Centres, Libraries, Recreation and Sport Centres are being assessed and more information will be released when it becomes available.

There will be no Council meetings until further notice.

For further information, please contact the Christchurch City Council call centre on (03) 941 8999 .

Media inquiries can be directed to (03) 941 7373 or 027 241 0244 .
