Christchurch earthquake - general update

10pm, Monday 6 September 2010

The Christchurch inner-city cordon will be further reduced at 8:00am tomorrow (Tuesday) morning, reopening Cathedral Square and Colombo Street. This is a major step toward freeing access to the City.

Civil Defence staff have made immense progress with Christchurch city's infrastructure today, with less than 5 percent of properties now without water.

A hundred leaking water pipes across the city have been repaired today, returning water to a further 21 streets. Water is still off in 38 streets.

Less than 1000 customers are still to have power reconnected.

Bus services will be running from early tomorrow (Tuesday) morning, except the inner-city shuttle.

Additional temporary bus stops will be provided on Colombo St between Tuam and Lichfield streets, for those who normally go to the bus exchange. This is due to buildings in Lichfield St still being assessed.

Visit www.metroinfo.org.nz for further information on the buses, and any changes to routes.

Silt was removed from roads and gutters across the city today in an effort to reduce the amount going into pipes, and hazardous areas have been coned off.

It was also announced today that Government will donate $5 million to the Christchurch Earthquake Fund.

Welfare centres at Addington, Linwood and Burnside will remain open tonight. Brooklands will be available if required.
