The Council is aiming for a plan that will support the cultural, social and economic wellbeing of Akaroa.
“We want to ensure that the township’s public places and spaces reflect the integrity and character of Akaroa as a historic rural settlement. This becomes more challenging with increased visitors and parking demand, especially at peak periods,” says Jenny Ridgen, the Council’s Healthy Environment Programme Manager.
“People with an interest in Akaroa’s future can help this process by letting us know if they feel what has been proposed in the plan is the best way to achieve these goals within available resources.
“The Plan also identifies projects that could be implemented should funding become available through the Council’s long-term planning process” she says.
Ms Ridgen says the draft Plan is informed by input from people known to have an interest in the Township. The need for a plan was identified as a priority in the Akaroa Harbour Basin Settlements Study.
The Plan aims to reflect the local character of the township and provide for ease of access and movement. It sets a direction on priorities.
Based on community feedback, the Council will prepare a final plan to be considered by the Akaroa-Wairewa Community Board, who will make a recommendation to the Council. The Council will make the final decision on the Plan.
Once the Plan has been adopted by the Council, more detailed consultation will be undertaken for some of the larger specific actions, such as the development of the BP Meats site.
Submissions must be received by 5pm Friday 8 October 2010.
