The Christchurch City Council has reviewed the speed limits at 34 locations within the city boundary, in line with the national Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2003, and is now consulting the community on these proposed changes. Submissions close at 5pm on Tuesday 24 August 2010.
The 34 areas are spread throughout the city, with a cluster to the west on the city’s perimeter and a number within the Central City and Linwood area.
City Council Transport and Greenspace Manager Alan Beuzenberg says in most instances the Council is proposing to reduce speed limits.
“The proposed changes are in areas where new residential subdivisions have been developed, changing the use of the road and the road environment, and where Council is looking to create slow roads because of high pedestrian use.”
He says in setting the proposed new limits staff have looked at the specific location, considered the local environment and evaluated the recommendations in line with the national speed limit rules.
“We now need the community to give us feedback on the proposed changes.”
