Your Council, Your Voice

Christchurch City Council is an elected representative body. We want to make sure you have the opportunity to voice your opinions.

Have Your Say

Whether you want to put forward a good idea, contribute to a current or upcoming project, or simply want to get something off your chest, we want to hear from you.

If you're interested in what's going on in your community, visit Have Your Say to find out about current, upcoming and past hot topics.

Specific issues

There are a number of options available for raising community or council specific concerns.

Attend a meeting

You are welcome to attend and observe proceedings at Council and community board meetings. Find out when the next meeting is and what’s on the agenda for discussion. This information is also available from the libraries or one of our local service centres.

In some instances the media and public may be excluded from parts of the public meetings. The reasons for these exclusions are governed by legislation and may include for example, the need to protect a group or individual's privacy.

Speak at a meeting

If you feel strongly about an issue and want to tell the Council or your community board about it, you can seek to present information at a meeting.

When you are given permission to speak about an issue, it is called a 'deputation by appointment'. To allow enough time for questions from community board members or councillors, we advise that you keep your presentation as brief as possible

If your issue is related to something local in your street, community or neighbourhood, it is best to raise it first with your local community board. They can pass your concerns onto Council if necessary.

A request to speak to your community board must be lodged with the relevant Community Board Advisor. Your request must be made no later than six working days before the board’s meeting and will need to be approved by the community board Chairman.

Deputations to the Council will generally only be received if they relate to an item on the Council's meeting agenda.

Meeting protocols

If your request to speak is approved, Council staff will provide you with more information on processes and meeting protocols, speaking times and presentation equipment.

Present a petition

If you want to present a petition to Council it must be less than 50 words (not including signatories). You can present it directly, or a councillor or community board member may present it on your behalf.

Whoever presents the petition will need to read it out, along with a statement from the petitioners and advise Council of the number of signatures it contains.

Access decisions

You can find decisions made by the Council or community boards in meeting reports within the agendas for the subsequent Council or community board meeting.
