Council Elections



Every three years local authorities in New Zealand hold elections on the second Saturday in October using the postal voting method.



By-election for Lyttelton–Mt Herbert Community Board member 2015

A by-election will be held to fill one extraordinary vacancy on the Lyttelton-Mt Herbert Community Board on Tuesday 17 February 2015. The vacancy has arisen from the recent resignation of Jane Broughton.

Nominations for the above position open on Monday 24 November 2014 and must be made on the nomination form available from the Christchurch City Council Civic Offices, 53 Hereford Street, the Lyttelton Service Centre, 15 London Street, or the Lyttelton Library, 35–37 London Street, Lyttelton.

Completed nomination documents must be received by the Electoral Officer no later than noon on Monday 22 December 2014. Each nomination must be accompanied by a deposit of $200 incl GST, payable by EFTPOS, cash, cheque or on-line banking.

Candidates are encouraged to submit a candidate profile statement and recent photograph for sending out with voting documents to electors if an election is required. The requirements for profile statements and photos are set out in a candidate information handbook which is available with the nomination form.

Electoral Roll
Preliminary electoral rolls for the by-election can be inspected at the Civic Offices, the Lyttelton Service Centre or the Lyttelton Library during normal office hours from Monday 24 November to Monday 22 December 2014.

Electors may enrol or amend their enrolment details on the residential electoral roll by:

  • Calling 0800 ENROL NOW (0800 36 76 56)
  • Visiting the Elections website (www.elections.org.nz)
  • Completing an enrolment form available from any NZ Post agency.

Updates to the preliminary electoral roll close at 4pm on 22 December 2014.

Applications for registration as a ratepayer elector are to be made on the non-resident ratepayer elector enrolment form available from the Christchurch City Council office and must be returned to the Electoral Officer before 4pm Monday 22 December 2014.

Election Details
If an election is required to fill this vacancy, the election will be conducted by postal voting under the First Past the Post electoral system.
