Find out what was decided about derelict buildings, litter fines, and the lease of social housing.

Council to explore options on derelict buildings

The Council is looking to apply pressure on owners of derelict buildings to fix them or make them safe. Councillors today voted to instruct staff to investigate developing a policy that would provide incentives for people to develop sites or introduce penalties for non-development of problem sites.

Funding for new community facility

The Council has agreed to give $325,000 to The Bridge South Brighton Trust to buy a building for a multi-use community facility in South Brighton. The money for the building will come from the Council's Capital Endowment Fund.

Lease of social housing

The Council approved the lease of its social housing buildings and land to the Otautahi Community Housing Trust, which will take over tenancy management of the social housing service from October 3. The Trust is currently applying for registration as a Community Housing Provider with the Government, in order to receive an income-related rent subsidy for new tenants who qualify.

Litter fines set

The Council has set a new range of fines for littering. The new range of litter fines range from $100 to a maximum $400 depending on the offence, in line with other councils.
