A total of 116 people want to stand in the 2016 Christchurch City Council elections on 8 October.

Nominations for the Council elections closed at 12 noon today with a last minute flurry.

The number of nominations currently stands at:

  • Three nominations for Mayor
  • 40 nominations for Council
  • 73 nominations for community boards

A list of confirmed nominations is available through ccc.govt.nz/elections and will become final by Monday as the nominations received today are still being processed.

There are 54 positions available – one Mayor, 16 Councillors and 37 Community Board members. The 2013 elections attracted 153 candidates.

Electoral Officer Jo Daly says she is pleased with the interest in this year’s election and that there is a candidate for every position.

“It’s great these people see themselves as potential leaders and are passionate about Christchurch and their community.”

Enrolments for the electoral roll also close today 12 August. Everyone correctly enrolled today will get their voting papers for the 2016 local elections sent to them in the mail from 16-21 September.

“If you miss out there is still time to enrol and get a special vote,” says Jo Daly.

All you need to do is:
• get an enrolment form from elections.org.nz, freetext your name and address to 3676 or call 0800 36 76 56
• once enrolled, email elections2016@ccc.govt.nz or call 941 8999 or 0800 800 169 for special voting papers.

“It’s really important people realise there’s still time to enrol and cast a special vote,” says Ms Daly.

“I’d also like to thank everyone who has enrolled. While recent enrolment rates in Christchurch are higher than the national average, almost 40 per cent of people aged 18 to 24 are still not enrolled and efforts continue to reach them.”
