A wastewater overflow is when wastewater flows out from the pipes or manholes that it is usually contained within and into a stream, river or the sea.

Updated when discharge ceases. Pollution may take up to 2 days to clear.

Wastewater overflow consent

The Council has a wastewater overflow consent from Environment Canterbury, which allows the discharge of untreated wastewater to waterways during large storms

Types of wastewater overflows

There are two types of wastewater overflows, dry weather and wet weather overflows.
