Find your collection day and details for the kerbside collection service, inner-city bag collections and Banks Peninsula community collection points.

From 1 February 2024, there are a few changes for Christchurch and Banks Peninsula residents to keep in mind when sorting their recycling, organics and rubbish.

New national standards to kerbside bin collections are in place, which means most Kiwis can now sort their recycling, organics and rubbish in the same way.

To help you prepare, we’ve updated our webpages with the new guidelines.

Banks Peninsula

We expanded our kerbside collection service in Banks Peninsula on 1 July 2022.

Banks Peninsula residents who do not live on a kerbside collection route can use the community collection points for household rubbish and recycling

The community collection points are either a wheelie bin, skip or a trailer.

Using the collection points

  • Only for rubbish and/or recycling dropped off by a resident.
  • Please keep your recycling items loose, not in bags.
  • Make sure you put the right waste in the right bin.
  • Take green waste, large items, large quantities and commercial waste to a transfer station for recycling or disposal.
Description of the collection point What can I put in here? How much can I put in here?
Trailer, yellow bin or yellow skip Household recycling 240 litres (6 small bags per fortnight)
Red bin or red skip Household rubbish 140 litres (4 small bags per fortnight)

Locations

All locations have a recycling collection. All locations except Akaroa and Little River have a rubbish collection.

Find the nearest collection point to you on our interactive map.

Full or contaminated bins

Phone the Council if you notice:

  • The skip, bin or trailer at the community collection point is too full
  • Anything in the skip, bin or trailer that should not be there
  • Witness illegal dumping.

Inner city bag collection

The Council offers a rubbish and a recycling collection service for residents and businesses in the inner city.

Properties in the inner city do not pay for rubbish and recycling collection through their rates. Instead, they buy Council rubbish and recycling bags to use the collection service.

You can find out the collection service of your property by using the address look-up tool or the inner city map(external link).

Collection

  • Rubbish bags are collected nightly.
  • Recycling bags are collected weekly on Wednesday night.
  • Put bags out on the collection day between 5pm and 7pm.
  • Please put bags on the kerb, where they won't obstruct pedestrians or vehicles.

Bags

Buy official Council bags from the Civic Offices at 53 Hereford Street(external link). Only official Council rubbish and recycling bags can be used. There is no inner city organics collection.

  • Rubbish (red) bags are 50 litres and cost $16.50 for a pack of five.
  • Recycling (yellow) bags are 50 litres and cost $6.65 for a pack of five.

To use your bags

  • Don't overfill your bag and make sure it can be tied securely to prevent littering.
  • Make sure the bag does not weigh more than 12kg.
  • Only these recycling items can go in the recycling bags.
  • Loose items and any waste not in an official Council bag will not be collected.

What not to put in your bags

  • sharp objects or anything that might puncture the bag (broken glass should be placed in a pierce-proof container in your rubbish bag).
  • excessively large items.
  • waste that might endanger any person, animal or vehicle during collection or disposal.
