The Council’s animal shelter provides proper and sufficient food, water and adequate shelter for found dogs and stock during their stay.

The dog shelter is not a place for dogs – they belong at home with their families.  To ensure your family dog is not impounded, it is essential your dog is:

  • currently registered and micro-chipped with the Council to assist the dog’s swift return home.
  • securely contained on your property to prevent the dog from wandering the streets.
  • kept under effective control at all times when being exercised.
  • immediately reported to animal management if lost.

If you see a dog that you'd like to adopt, you must:

  • be prepared to commit to the health, welfare and care of the dog.
  • bring identification, such as your driver's licence, passport, utility bill or birth certificate.
  • be over 16 years of age.

You can discuss adopting a dog with shelter staff.
