Dog registration is a legal requirement of every dog owner in New Zealand. All dog owners are legally required to register their dogs before the dog is three months of age.
All registered dog owners are sent an annual re-registration reminder notice in June of each year. These serve as tax invoices once paid.
Legally, dogs must be registered by 1 July each year, and penalty fees may be charged on unregistered dogs after 31 July. Council generally allows owners until 31 July to register.
Registration fees for dog owners with Responsible Dog Owner (RDO) status must be paid by 30 June each year to claim any fee discount they are eligible for.
