The Council has been awarded Carbon Credits, what does this mean for Christchurch?

A Christchurch City Council plan to collect methane gas from the Burwood landfill site to fire the boilers at the QEII swimming pool and has been awarded 200,000 emissions reduction units (Carbon Credits) under the government's 'Projects to Reduce Emissions Programme'. This is part of the global efforts to tackle climate change through the Kyoto Protocol adopted by New Zealand.

Between 2008 and 2012, the project would earn the Council around $3.5 million and will replace 6.5 million litres of LPG used at QEII with landfill gas.
