What can you tell me about the poppy sculpture on Anzac Drive?

The poppy sculpture was done in response to a suggestion from a local RSA member at the official opening of Anzac Drive, that perhaps a commemorative artwork could be done to give significance to the Anzac name. The Burwood/Pegasus Community Board thought that was a great idea and formed a group to manage the project. 3 artists were asked to submit concept designs and of these, a joint submission by Judith Streat and Ian Lamont was chosen with the sculpture that is now installed.

The sculpture is named 'Poppies over Gallipoli' and is of 6 large metal poppies painted bright red, on black stems, joined together with a relief landscape in mild steel depicting the shoreline of Gallipoli as seen from the sea. In front of that steel is a steel plate with the words of a famous poem by Kemal Attaturk hand cut into it. The sculpture was officially unveiled on 11 November 2003 at a service in conjunction with Remembrance Day observance.
