Can you tell me about the Returned Service (RSA) Personnel Burial Plots?
The City Council provides Returned Services personnel with cemetery plots, at no cost, in the Services section of Ruru Lawn cemetery, as a mark of respect for their service to their country. Veteran Affairs provide the Council with a grant for the maintenance of this area.
Blocks at Ruru are:
1A – Burials, 1B - Burials, 1C - Ashes and Burials, 1D – Burials, 1E – Burials, 1F – Burials, 1G – Burials, 1H – Ashes, 1I – Burials and 1J - Burials
All burials prior to 1988 are at single depth and only ashes can be added to these plots.
Criteria:
The returned person must be the first person deceased to claim the plot.
If the non returned person dies first they may be cremated and ashes interred at the same time the returned person is buried.
Only the returned person and their partner may be buried within these plots. (Unmarried partners are considered when they have lived together in a relationship in the nature of marriage for up to three years.)
Children may not be buried in a returned persons plot.
If the Returned person did not do service overseas, and was based in New Zealand only, his year of service must be noted. If the service was after 1947 the application may not be considered/or agreed to by Veteran Affairs.
The Funeral Director will check eligibility.
Charges
There is only a charge for digging and a lowering device, if used.
Headstones
Headstones must be ordered through Veteran Affairs in Wellington. A form for the headstone can be arranged through the Christchurch RSA and posted to Wellington.
The headstone usually comes from Melbourne, Australia and takes up to three months to arrive. The headstone is placed by Bruce from L Robertson Memorials under contract to Veteran Affairs.
