What species are the blossom / cherry trees by Hagley Park?

These trees are the Yoshino Cherry tree, located on Harper Avenue. They are a well known spring time spectacle and the trees were planted approximately 50 years ago.

They are Yoshino cherries, botanical name - Prunus yedoensis. There were a further 120 planted either side of Riccarton Avenue in 1994, the 'Year of the Family'.

In May 2000 a further 60 trees were planted in Harper Avenue to ultimately take the place of the present trees, which are aging. When the present trees are removed, a second row will be planted which will make the sight even more stunning.
