Can I take firewood off a park or roadside?
No. The general public are not allowed to cut or take timber or firewood from any Council land irrespective of whether the tree or branches are standing or lying on the ground for the following reasons:
- Under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, only contractors or recognised volunteer organisations who have satisfied the Council that they have the necessary skills and can carry out the work in accordance with the safety requirements of the Act may carry out work on Council land.
- The Council sells timber and firewood to firewood and timber merchants the money earned is for the benefit of the ratepayers as a whole.
- There may be a good environmental reason for leaving the dead/fallen tree material to remain where it is.
There is also a problem with people entering unsafe areas after storms where they will place themselves at risk from falling branches and trees.
