What do I do if I find a dead animal on the road, in a park or on the beach?

Please call the Councils Action line and we will arrange for the animal to be collected (only if its on Council property) usually within two hours.

We need to know;

• What type of animal it is
• What colour and size is it
• The location of the animal

The Councils Contractor will collect and dispose of the dead animal. If you would like to check if an animal belongs to you please call the Councils Action line, they will contact the contractor on your behalf.

If the dead animal is a dog and has its Council Animal Control ID tag on, finder must phone Animal Control. The Council phone number is on the tag. The operator will ask for the dog identity number and make contact with the owner or their agent. It is recommended even if you do have the owner's details not to try to contact the owner yourself.

Dead animals on Transit roads i.e. State Highways are to be reported to Transit NZ, see number below. If the animal is on the footpath of a Transit road, please call the Councils Action line.

If your enquiry is in regards to the Banks Peninsula Ward, please call the number below.
