Can I take sand from the City's beaches or parks for my child's sandpit?

Normally sand may not be removed from the city's beaches, dunes or from any other land controlled by the Council.

However removal of windblown sand from car parks and roadways that is not required for restoration of sand dunes may be available to individuals and non-profit organisations at no charge, under the direction of the Coast Care programme manager.

Generally the quantity is limited to one or two trailer loads or equivalent per person/organisation or as agreed with the Transport and Greenspace Unit.

Persons wishing to obtain sand must first apply to the Coastal Area Park Rangers who manage the Coast Care programme and supply their name, address and registration number of their vehicle.

Sand must be loaded by hand. Use of loaders or other heavy equipment is not permitted.

Any sand obtained should be checked, sifted due to the possibility of broken glass and other contaminants being in the sand. The Council is absolved of any liability in this regard.

Clean sand can also be obtained from your local commercial bulk trade supplier.(under Garden Supplies in the Yellow Pages)
