Can rotting sea lettuce be removed?
The Council can remove sea lettuce from the beach at South Shore as we have consent from Environment Canterbury for this area. The consent allows collection and removal to be carried out on up to six days annually. Removal times will be set according to:
- Prevailing and predicted weather conditions
- Extent of the problem
- Level of complaints
- Programmed/pending work in the area
The Council also had consent granted in July 2002 to carry out small scale sea lettuce control and removal trials at several sites within the estuary including South Shore, Humphreys Drive and McCormacks Bay. Trials began in November 2002 and are continuing. This consent will expire in 2010.
