How can I use a wharf, mooring or slipway on the Banks Peninsula and how much does it cost?

All Enquiries Dealt with through the Akaroa Service Centre

Moorings
Christchurch City Council owns 24 fixed pile moorings in Diamond Harbour within Lyttelton Harbour. If you wish to use one of these moorings, please contact the Council Action Line. For enquiries regarding any other moorings, please contact Environment Canterbury on the number below. The Council also has 4 moorings in Akaroa Harbour.

Slipways
You are free to use Council-owned slipways without having to make a booking, but fees are charged for using the slipway (please see the link below for a list of fees).

There are two ways to pay the fees for using a slipway. The first option is to put money in the honesty box every time that you use the slipway (the box is cleared regularly by council staff). The alternative is to pay for an annual Boat Ramp License which allows you to make a one-off payment to use the slipways for one year. Boat Ramp licenses can be obtained by printing the application form (linked below) and returning it to any Council Service Centre, or you can pick the form up at any Council Service Centre.

Slipways are cleaned every three months.

Wharves
Council-owned wharves can be used freely by the public to drop off/pick up people or things, but if you are at the wharf for more than an hour you will have to pay a fee. Please see the fees and charges sheet (linked below). There is no booking required.

Boats may tie up at the wharf overnight, but permission must be obtained from a Banks Peninsula Service Centre, preferably in writing. In bad weather you may be asked to leave the wharf and moor out in the harbour.

Commercial operators wanting to use wharves frequently should apply in writing to Kathy Jarden, Corporate Support Unit, PO Box 237, Christchurch.

Other Information
If you see objects floating in the harbour and you feel that they may damage your boat, please call Environment Canterbury on the number below.

For any maintenance issues with slipways, wharves and moorings, please contact the Council’s Action Line.
