How do I know if my house is considered to be a character house?

Character houses can be identified by any or all of the following qualities:

  • Age and community association
  • Distinctive architectural design appropriate to the age of the house
  • Authentic use of materials and craftsmanship
  • Contribution to the residential character of the local streetscape
  • Recognised by the community as a local landmark
  • Association with other character houses in the local street
  • Good condition and retention of many of its original external features (e.g. external doors and windows, verandas and features, roof line and roof features, turrets and original external cladding)
