How do I know if my house is considered to be a character house?
Character houses can be identified by any or all of the following qualities:
Age and community association
Distinctive architectural design appropriate to the age of the house
Authentic use of materials and craftsmanship
Contribution to the residential character of the local streetscape
Recognised by the community as a local landmark
Association with other character houses in the local street
Good condition and retention of many of its original external features (e.g. external doors and windows, verandas and features, roof line and roof features, turrets and original external cladding)
