Do I need a Licensed Building Practitioner?

Licensing of building practitioners is an initiative in the Building Act 2004, aimed at raising standards and improving outcomes in the building industry.

The Department of Building & Housing has a detailed communications strategy which will help people understand how the licensing will work. Please click on the link below or direct your inquiries to the Department of Building and Housing's Licensing call centre on 0800 60 60 50.

The provisions in the Building Act 2004 do not come into effect until 30 November 2009.

In the meantime, there is no requirement for any designers, builders, trades people to be "Licensed Building Practitioners", however plumbing, drainage, gas fitting and some electrical work is required to be carried out by suitably registered people.
