When do I require an extension of time for my building consent.
You have 12 months to commence your building work from the granted date. This is the date the consent is issued and paid for. The "Granted Date" is the term used in the Building Act, for the day the consent is paid for and uplifted.
If you haven't requested an inspection within 11 months of the issue date, you will receive mail which includes a returnable questionnaire.
If you have not completed the work within 2 years, an inspection will be carried out to determine if a code compliance certificate can be issued.
If you will not be starting or completing the work within the required time, you will need to request an extension of time from the council. The owner must apply for an extension and an agreement made with the Building Consent Authority as to how long that extension will be. The extension of time request should be in writing. A fee applies.
