Kapuatohe Management Plan

Preface

The complex which is commonly referred to as the Kapuatohe Historic Reserve comprises two distinct parts. Whilst complementary to each other, each of these parts currently has a different legal status.

The larger and best known of the two is 665 Main North Road on which the historic Belfast School house is located. Since 1982 the 2731m2 comprising this lot has held the classification of Historic Reserve.

The adjoining lot at 663 Main North Road however, whilst purchased by the former Waimairi District Council in 1978 with the intention that the land be retained as a reserve, currently does not have reserve status.

The need to rectify this discrepancy has been recognised and the procedure to classify 663 Main North Road for historic purposes is currently underway.

For the purpose of this management plan it is assumed that the application to classify 663 Main North Road historic reserve will be successful enabling both parts to be administered as one reserve with a single classification.

Introduction

Located at the southern end of Belfast the Kapuatohe Historic Reserve is one of Belfast's major landmarks. Providing an attractive vista for passing motorists, attention is drawn to the reserve by the 113 year old school house which forms the main visual focus.

The school house also provides the main historical focus of the reserve, the distinctive former schoolmasters house providing a physical link with the past in a town where there a few similar reminders of the early days of settlement.

Additionally the school house stands as a monument to commemorate the local residents who were largely responsible for the retention and restoration of the school house. The relative good order and attractive appearance of the school house today testimony of their inspiration and dedication to save restore this noteable building.
