Hagley Park & Christchurch Botanic Gardens Plans

Plans for the future

A growing urban population, expanding tourism and development of the inner city puts increasing pressure on access to and the use of Hagley Park, the Botanic Gardens and surrounding areas. The Council has committed $11.1 million for a new information centre and to upgrade operational facilities. To ensure these funds are spent wisely and that the Park and the Gardens can meet future demands without compromising their special features, the Council has prepared forward-viewing plans for these spaces.

In 2006 public comment was sought on draft plans for Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens and a resounding response was received. Following a comprehensive process that involved the hearing of submitters and full consideration of submissions by the Hagley Park/Botanic Gardens Hearings Subcommittee, the Council resolved on 16 August 2007 to adopt the three draft plans, incorporating the changes recommended by the Subcommittee, as the operative plans.

Adjustment of the draft plans and detailed planning for inclusion of master plan projects in the Long-Term Council Community Plan 2009-19 is now underway.
