Upcoming Exhibitions and Events

He rau Tipuna – leaves of our ancestors
Date: Tuesday 14 July – Saturday 22 August
Admission: Free

As leaves fall from trees they take on new beauty and meaning with a change in colour and texture. For the weavers in He rau Tipuna, weaving knowledge and the garments they produce, like leaves, respond to changing materials and process – from the traditional to the outrageous.

Through their labours the weavers tell the 'story' of their garments – a commentary, a memory or a personality. They ask – what are we, the present generation, leaving those who follow?

 Shelved Memories
Celebrating 150 years of Public Libraries in Christchurch
Date: Tuesday 25 August – Thursday 8 October 2009
Admission: Free

Christchurch City Libraries first opened its doors to the public of Christchurch when the Mechanics Institute began operation from a small room in 1859. In the intervening 150 years the library has grown from a small collection of several hundred books to the present-day collection of over 1 million items, but along the way the library has acquired some treasured examples of the publishing heritage of New Zealand. A selection of these valued texts form the basis of this exhibition celebrating 150 years of public libraries in Christchurch.
