Heritage brochures

Designed to help you explore Christchurch’s heritage, these brochures will point you and your students in the right direction to uncover, discover and gain a real sense of our past.

Antarctic heritage trail
The self-guided Antarctic heritage trail provides an opportunity for students to fully appreciate Christchurch’s links with the Antarctic.

The trail links eight individual sites within three main precincts, each significant in their relationship with Antarctica. The three precincts are the Central City, Lyttelton, and the Christchurch Airport, home to the International Antarctic Centre.

Christchurch before 1850
Guiding you to traces of the first peoples on the landscape Christchurch before 1850  [PDF 326KB] identifies two trails, the Inner City Heritage Trail and the Coastal Heritage Trail. Information panels and plaques have been erected along the trails that provide stories about historically significant sites.

The brochure also outlines the major events in the early history of Canterbury, ending with the Canterbury Association settlement in 1850.

Historic Christchurch
You can follow this self-guided heritage trail on foot. The Historic Christchurch brochure [PDF 287KB] gives a brief introduction to 29 of the city’s most admired historic buildings. Although public access is unavailable in some buildings, you can gain an appreciation of them from the street. The interiors of the churches are particularly recommended.
